The FBI is relocating its headquarters to the Ronald Reagan Building complex in Washington, DC.

The FBI will relocate from the J. Edgar Hoover Building in Washington, which served as its headquarters in 1975. The Reagan Building complex is currently home to US Customs and Border Protection and other tenants, and the FBI will take over the space that was recently occupied by the US Agency for International Development.

“This move not only provides a world-class location for the FBI’s public servants, but it also saves Americans billions of dollars on new construction and avoids more than $300 million in deferred maintenance costs at the J. Edgar Hoover facility,” said Michael Peters, public buildings service commissioner of the General Services Administration.

However, the FBI’s announcement drew anger from Democrats in Maryland’s congressional delegation – in November 2023, the Biden administration announced the FBI headquarters would be relocated to a site in Greenbelt, Maryland.

“Not only was this decision final, the Congress appropriated funds specifically for the purpose of the new, consolidated campus to be built in Maryland,” said the Democratic lawmakers in a statement published in The Hill. “Now the administration is attempting to redirect those funds — both undermining Congressional intent and dealing a blow to the men and women of the FBI — since we know that a headquarters located within the District would not satisfy their security needs. Simply moving down the street would ignore the real threats the Bureau faces and further jeopardize the safety of those protecting our communities. That’s why we will be fighting back against this proposal with every tool we have.”
