Federal Housing Finance Agency Director Bill Pulte announced that he will step away from his position as interim Director of National Intelligence and enable Jay Clayton to take his Senate-confirmed role on Monday, Aug. 3.
In a post on his personal X account, Pulte stated, “After speaking with the President Trump and Jay Clayton, we have decided the DNI transition will take place this coming Monday. I am eternally grateful to President Trump for the opportunity to serve as Director of National Intelligence, while he completed historic declassifications and we right sized the ODNI. I have no doubt that Jay will do a tremendous job. I have offered Jay my complete and total support as he transitions to take over this incredible agency!”
Clayton was confirmed by the US Senate on Tuesday, but in a break with tradition he was not immediately sworn in. Pulte, who also holds the chairman roles as Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, reportedly lobbied Trump to extend his interim director duties. However, his continued presence provoked irritation from Senate Democrats who questioned why Clayton was not being allowed to begin his new job.
Pulte added a follow-up tweet that said, “I am excited to spend even more time on Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, as the companies continue the historic ascension under President Trump.”
