One of Connecticut’s most iconic historic buildings has been listed for sale at $4.95 million.

The 70,000-square-foot Waterbury Union Station building serves as the headquarters for the Republican-American newspaper. The Hartford Business Journal reports the listing comes one month after the Republican-American was sold to Hearst Connecticut Media Group.

In December, a proposal was raised to transform the property into a development featuring 38 luxury apartments, retail and office space, and the potential for a high-end restaurant. The newspaper would have maintained 10,000 square feet in the building, which was constructed in 1909 as a train station and is best known for its 245-foot-tall clock tower adorned with gargoyles.

Waterbury’s Board of Aldermen agreed to apply for a $250,000 state grant to pay for detailed architectural and site planning on the proposal – more than $100,000 has already been spent on that initiative.

Parker Benjamin Real Estate Services is acting as the broker for the property, which is still owned by American Republican Inc. – the company’s sale of its newspaper did not include transferring ownership of the building, which was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1978.
