The Kansas City Royals have submitted a plan that would rezone a section of downtown Kansas City to create a 90-acre urban redevelopment district.
Fox4KC.com reports the application focuses on the southern edge of Crown Center and envisions an entertainment destination with year-round events that includes concerts, festivals, community gatherings, and other programmed experiences. The plan calls for improvements to several streets along with the reconstructing the US-71/22nd Street interchange, I-35/Pennway Street interchange and the I-35 South off-ramp to 20th Street.
Furthermore, the proposal seeks to limit the height of new buildings, stating these structures should not exceed the height of any existing district building by more than 30%.
In April, the Royals announced plans for a new $1.9 billion stadium and surrounding district. Under the terms of the plans, the city will contribute $600 million in funding, with additional funding coming from state tax credits, while $2 billion will be sourced from private financing. The new stadium complex will be built on the site of the Hallmark Cards corporate office headquarters, and the company would relocate to a new headquarters complex within the proposed development.
