London Mayor Sadiq Khan is pressing for newly elected U.K. Prime Minister Keir Starmer to provide him with billions to address the capital city’s need for more affordable housing.
The Evening Standard reported that Khan has been pushing for a £2.2billion “emergency stimulus” package to boost homebuilding but was previously rejected by Rishi Sunak’s Conservative government. Following yesterday’s election victory for Starmer’s Labour Party, Khan said he is now dealing with an environment where “constant obstacles not being put in my way.”
Khan welcomed Labour’s victory by noting the party’s manifesto included a pledge to build 1.5 million housing units in its first parliamentary term, adding, “A large chunk of that should be in London.”
Starmer, who did not publicly comment on Khan’s remarks, appointed Angela Rayner as Levelling Up Secretary with responsibility for housing, but he has yet to name a new housing minister.
