Missouri House Speaker Jon Patterson announced the launch of a Special Interim Committee on Property Tax Reform, along with a schedule for public meetings to discuss the topic.
KSHB.com reports Patterson, a Republican, will call on Gov. Mike Kehoe to request a special legislative session in September to review the recommendations fielded from a series of six public meetings, which will be held from mid-July through early September.
Patterson stated that opening the process to the public will “ensure fairness, transparency, and sustainability for taxpayers and municipalities across the state.” He added that in his county, the property tax environment “is a huge problem – I would say it goes to crisis levels.”
Patterson’s initiative received bipartisan support from State Rep. Kemp Strickler, a Democrat, who is on the interim committee.
“It is an issue we need to address, and I want to be a part of helping to address that,” Strickler said.
