New York City Mayor Eric Adams has announced the historic Roosevelt Hotel will cease to serve as a migrant shelter in June.

The Wall Street Journal reports Adams’ administration said plans to close the hotel were being formulated since December, when the number of arriving migrants dropped to 800 per week – when the hotel was first repositioned as a migrant shelter in May 2023, the city was averaging about 4,000 migrants per week. More than 173,000 migrants have registered at the hotel, and the services offered at the hotel will be switched to other municipal locations.

“Thanks to the sound policy decisions of our team, we are able to announce the closure of this site and help even more asylum seekers take the next steps in their journeys as they envision an even brighter future,” Adams said.
