The odds are against extremely low-income renters finding affordable housing in the nation’s gambling capital, according to a new data report from the National Low Income Housing Coalition.
The newly published “The Gap: A Shortage of Available Homes” analyzed the 50 largest metropolitan areas for the availability of affordable rental housing. The report found extremely low-income renters faced the most severe shortages in Las Vegas, where there are 13 affordable and available rental homes for every 100 extremely low-income renter households.
The other major metros where extremely low-income renters are facing affordable housing shortages include Dallas (14/100), Austin (16/100), San Diego (16/100) and Houston (16/100). The report observed that more than 85% of extremely low-income renters in these five metros experience severe housing cost burdens.
At the other end of the spectrum, the metropolitan areas with the least severe shortages of rental homes affordable and available to extremely low-income renters are Pittsburgh (52/100). Boston (46/100), Providence (41/100), St. Louis (40/100), and Tulsa (39/100). However, the report warned that “while these areas have the least severe shortages, they typically have less than half of the affordable and available homes needed for extremely low-income renters. High rates of severe cost burden for the lowest-income renters persist across the top 50 metropolitan areas.”
The report added the “lack of subsidized affordable homes for extremely low-income households is a significant factor in explaining the prevalence of their severe cost burdens across the top 50\ metropolitan areas.” As an example, the report noted that HUD-assisted housing in Boston accounted for 17% of the rental stock while 63% of the lowest-income renters are severely cost-burdened.
“Affordable housing” is another fake crisis. Stop pushing the hoax. America is sick and tired of these fake crises. Everyone pushing this hoax should be DOGEd.
