A coalition of South Dakota groups seeking to create a ballot referendum on a contentious new property tax relief law has failed to gather enough signatures to put the measure up for a public vote.
SDPB reports South Dakotans for Fair Taxes tried to get public input on SB 245, which takes $110 million dollars from a temporary sales tax cut set to expire this year and creates a homeowner property tax reduction fund. The coalition – which consists of Bread for the World SD, the South Dakota AFL-CIO and Dakota Rural Action – argued the new law favors homeowners while creating new cost burdens on renters.
The group needed to get a little over 17,500 signatures by today for inclusion on November’s ballot. Instead, the group vowed to raise the issue in the next legislative session.
“The cost-of-living crisis is hitting all South Dakotans,” said Ned Horsted, chairman of South Dakotans for Fair Taxes and a Dakota Rural Action board member. “SB 245 disproportionately benefits those with the most expensive homes and is paid for by the rest of us at checkout, including groceries for our families.”
