Summary

Optimal Blue CEO Joe Tyrrell joined the Mortgage Bankers Association board for its 2027 membership year.

Joe Tyrrell, chief executive of mortgage technology provider Optimal Blue, has joined the Mortgage Bankers Association’s board of directors for the association’s 2027 membership year.

Optimal Blue announced the appointment October 11 and said Tyrrell was sworn in during the MBA’s annual convention in Chicago. The company did not identify a committee assignment or a specific policy initiative tied to his new board role.

Tyrrell became Optimal Blue’s chief executive in 2024. His earlier positions include chief executive of Medallia and president of ICE Mortgage Technology. He also held senior roles at Ellie Mae before that business was acquired in 2020. Optimal Blue describes his experience as spanning mortgage operations, risk, technology and business leadership.

His appointment comes as mortgage trade groups debate the cost of credit reports, agency underwriting changes and how quickly lenders should adopt new technologies. Optimal Blue provides pricing, hedging and execution software to lenders and investors, making it a participant in several of those debates. A board seat gives Tyrrell a formal role in the industry’s largest mortgage banking trade association, although it does not confer regulatory authority.

The company said Tyrrell has advocated applying artificial intelligence to defined mortgage-business problems rather than adopting it solely for novelty. That is a description of his stated approach, not an independent evaluation of Optimal Blue’s AI products.

Optimal Blue reports that its technology supports more than one-third of U.S. mortgage price locks and nearly 40% of loans sold into the secondary market. Those estimates help explain the company’s industry reach, but the announcement does not indicate that its clients have endorsed a particular MBA policy position.

WRE News previously covered Tyrrell’s appointment as Optimal Blue CEO. His addition to the MBA board is a separate governance development. It coincides with the company’s October 12 announcements of a borrower-engagement acquisition and a direct-lock integration with Fannie Mae.

The MBA’s board helps guide the association’s work for members across lending and servicing. The organization advocates on policy questions, but individual directors do not set federal housing rules. Any future industry positions or regulatory proposals will require their own documentation and scrutiny.
